MISSION AND HISTORY

The University of Liberia Alumni Chorus was organized by former members of the University of Liberia Chorus. Presently the roster of the Alumni Chorus comprises only alumni who sang under the direction of Mrs. Agnes Nebo von Ballmoos during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. During the late 1980’s the civil unrest in Liberia caused a major disruption in the operations of the University of Liberia. The subsequent 15-year civil war completely devastated the university and the country.

The University of Liberia Alumni Chorus has been organized as a non-profit organization in the state of Massachusetts with the primary goal of providing assistance to the University of Liberia in the following areas:

•Award scholarships to deserving students seeking higher education at the University of Liberia

•Give teaching awards of excellence to faculty members who distinguish themselves by their contribution to the university and its students

•Establish a Fine Arts Center in honor of Mrs. Agnes Nebo von Ballmoos, Liberia’s only ethno-musicologist and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Liberia until her death in 2000

•Assist the university in its efforts to reestablish itself as an accredited institution of higher education

The first concert and major fund raiser for the chorus will be on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at the Woodside United Methodist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The chorus has scheduled seven rehearsals in preparation for this concert. Rehearsals will be held in Silver Spring, Maryland; Staten Island, New York; and Atlanta, Georgia. Choristers who sang with Mrs. von Ballmoos now find themselves scattered throughout the world in what is being called “The Liberian Diaspora”.
